The wait is over for console-bound adventurers in Tamriel! ZeniMax Online Studios has officially enabled player-made add-ons for The Elder Scrolls Online on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, a game-changing feature that PC players have enjoyed for years.
This highly anticipated quality-of-life update, part of the recent Update 46 base-game patch (which officially went live on all platforms on June 18, 2025, but had its add-on functionality for consoles enabled on June 23, 2025), promises to significantly enhance the console experience, offering a level of customization previously unavailable.

This marks a monumental shift for ESO‘s console player base. Since the game’s launch on PC in April 2014, player-created add-ons have been a cornerstone of the experience, allowing for everything from improved UI elements and combat trackers to advanced trading tools and detailed map overlays. While console players have always enjoyed the rich world and extensive content of ESO, the lack of add-on support has often been a point of contention. Now, that disparity is finally being addressed.

How Console Add-ons Work: A Seamless Integration

ZeniMax Online Studios has integrated the add-on system directly into the game’s menus, making it remarkably user-friendly for console players. To access this new feature:

  1. Log into the game.
  2. Navigate to “Options.”
  3. Select “Add-Ons.”
  4. Choose “Browse Add-Ons” to explore the available creations.

From this menu, players can filter by name, number of users, status, and category. They can also search for specific add-ons, view release notes, and easily install, uninstall, reinstall, or ignore updates for their chosen enhancements. There’s also a “Manage My Add-Ons” section to see a complete list of active add-ons and enable/disable them individually.

Important Considerations and Current Limitations

While this is a massive step forward, it’s important for console players to be aware of a few key restrictions at launch:

  • Current-Gen Consoles Only: This feature is exclusive to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Players on older generation consoles (PS4, Xbox One) will not have access to add-ons. This is likely due to technical limitations and resource management.
  • UI Add-ons Supported Only: At present, only UI (User Interface) add-ons are supported. This means complex mods that alter game mechanics, introduce new assets, or deeply integrate with the game’s code beyond the UI are not yet available. However, even with this limitation, UI add-ons can dramatically improve quality of life, especially for complex systems like inventory management, quest tracking, and combat feedback.
  • 100MB Storage Limit: Players can install a maximum of 100MB of add-ons at any one time. This limit encourages players to be selective with their choices and prioritize the most impactful enhancements.
  • Community-Made and Supported: It’s crucial to remember that these add-ons are created by the ESO community. ZeniMax Online Studios provides the platform, but the individual developers are responsible for the content, upkeep, and bug fixes of their creations. Players are advised to reach out to the specific add-on creator if they encounter any issues.

The Impact: A Transformed Console Experience

The introduction of add-ons for consoles is a game-changer for several reasons:

  • Enhanced Quality of Life: Many common frustrations for console players, such as limited inventory space, difficult-to-track buffs/debuffs, or less intuitive guild store searching, can now be alleviated by popular add-ons. Players can tailor their UI to their exact preferences, making for a more efficient and enjoyable gameplay experience.
  • Improved Accessibility: Add-ons can offer accessibility features that might not be natively available, helping a wider range of players engage with the game.
  • Deeper Immersion & Customization: While not “game-changing” in terms of mechanics, an optimized UI can make the world of Tamriel feel even more immersive and personalized.
  • Closing the Gap with PC: This update significantly narrows the gap between the PC and console versions of ESO, providing console players with a level of control and customization that has long been a hallmark of the PC experience. This move could potentially attract new players to the console version and retain existing ones.

The timing of this feature, arriving with the substantial Update 46 and the “Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1” content (part of the 2025 Content Pass), means console players have a wealth of new content to explore alongside their newly empowered UI. Update 46 also brought significant base-game changes, including the free “Subclassing” system, allowing players to mix and match skill lines from different classes for unprecedented build variety, and a “Hero’s Return” feature to help lapsed players jump back in.

As The Elder Scrolls Online continues its impressive 10-year journey, this move to bring player-made add-ons to console players is a testament to ZeniMax Online Studios’ ongoing commitment to improving the game and listening to its community. Console players can now truly make Tamriel their own, one add-on at a time.
